Foot Turning

As the hot summer has receded, enquiries for wood turning have ramped up again. I don't know what happened in the summer - hopefully just people enjoying the sunshine too much to care about their projects.

Anyway, here we go again for the winter, and the first job to come in involved turning 4 new short legs/feet, for an old chaise longue. The originals were in Mahogany - obviously difficult to get hold of now except in re-cycled form - so I directed the client to Sapele - a close alternative in terms of grain and colour.

Sapele, roughed down.
Sapele, roughed down.

Once roughed down, it was a relatively straightforward job to map out a route to get to the finished articles.

This was an unusual job, in that it was mostly turned with a square block headed gouge rather than a spindle - most of the turning was square-on. The sapele turns to tiny flecks, and there's a good sack of chips for fire-starting, just from these 4 small feet.

It was nice to have a straightforward job to kick off the turning 'season', and a great chance to visit Dalmann UK in Lambourn - a true Aladdin's Cave of exotic hardwoods. I came back with rather a lot of lovely timber, including some Indian Ebony. Watch this space......
